Mediterranean coastal ecosystems in the Anthropocene:
how marine heat waves are transforming marine benthic habitats? (HEATMED)
Marine heatwaves (hereafter MHWs) are extreme climate events of anomalously and prolonged high ocean temperatures. MHWs have important detrimental effects on marine ecosystems leading to substantial ecological and economic impacts affecting from tropical to temperate ecosystems worldwide.
The HEATMED project aims to enlarge the understanding of the large-scale and long-term consequences of Marine Heat Waves (MHWs) in the Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, we will evaluate the current and future impacts of MHWs across multiple spatial scales and biological organization levels focusing on rocky coastal ecosystems.
